Visiting the past for Cactus Monday

You may remember this little "rat tail" cactus I showed last October. It had been through some ups and downs since I became caretaker of it. It had started to show some pretty pink growth.

But it was mostly just old tails.

Fast forward to today, and it almost looks like a different plant. The pink tips are still there a little, but it is mostly green.

And meet a newer thorny friend. This little guy came to me from a neighbor whom my son had been helping with yard clean-up. He was chopped off from the main cactus and my son knowing, I would expect him to save it, did and brought it home to me. The interesting thing is the varying forms it is showing, the new growth looks very little like the old part. I'm not sure what it is but I have a hunch it might be a night bloomer. We will see!

To see other Cactus Monday wonders please visit Terri's Painted Daisies and have a wonderful Cactus Monday.

I'm guessing your newer one is a cereus hildemannius...(aka peruvian apple) but there are several closely related species it could be. I'm guessing that one, because of the bluer new growth. Since it's getting some shade during the day next to your house, the growth will get that wonderful bluish look, if it was set out in the middle of the yard with no shade at all, it would get the yellow-green color, but again, this holds true for several plants... Whichever species, it will bloom with huge white blooms. At night. And may get up to 20 feet tall...

Rat tail cactus are so fun to grow. They grow a lot huh?
The new cactus does look like a Peruvian Torch. I have one that a friend gave me last summer and I had more fun with that plant. Sneaking out at midnight for a peek!(-: You will enjoy yours too!!! HCM!!!

Thank-you all for your comments-
Wicky Woo- I would be thrilled to see my cactus show up in your artwork down the line!
Claude- you are brilliant! I am a little awed by the thought of it getting 20 feet tall. Guess I better get it out of that little pot and into the ground.
