August Cactus Treasures

I bought this little cactus early this spring. It was not labeled and showed no sign of flowers. However after a month of so these little red fruits started popping up on a regular basis. I think it is fascinating how they form down inside and then pop up to the surface. The little fruits don't stick around too long- I suspect the Cactus Wrens are having themselves a little treat.

My little Red-Headed Irishman cactus is also popping out little fruits these days. These are little pinkish colored fruits as you can see in the picture below. If you look closely you will also see that this little cactus has produced his first little baby bump on his side.

And just a couple more pictures- this little owl like cactus has been blooming and blooming in spite of the heat. I love the way the flowers seem to circle his eyes.

And one of my Gymnocalycium cacti - I love these guys as they just bloom and bloom and bloom!

Happy August and Happy Cactus Monday! Please visit Teri's Painted Daises and see other cacti themed art and photography.

These are all fascinating! I like the checkerboard effect on the first one, and it is intriguing how the little red fruit appear.

I love these cacti especially the "owl". I can see an owl there in that cactus. I painted a gy... this week as you noticed. I got the image from British Cactus Society. They have so many pictures of beautiful blooms of cacti. HCM...

Great cactuses, they all seem to bloom about a month after you get them. Happy CM!

Fascinating little guys aren't they... the unexpected geometry of them is what probably attracted me to the plants in the first place. And BTW - I make your bar-B-Que chicken too. Yummy, ain't it?

WHat beautiful cactus - I know very little about them since we don't have them in AK. Thanks for adding yourself as a follower - would you mind if I used some of your pics in future to draw or paint from? Then I would have a wider variety of cacti to look at.

It's amazing what a difference a few degrees makes. Your cacti look really great--mine are looking dried and scorched. Even my most reliable bloomer, the Gymnocalycium baldiana, seems to be in dormancy. I am so used to seeing blooms from late April through September on it, and this year, hardly any!

These are wonderful cacti - and you can grow them outdoors? I am not usually a fan of extreme heat but right now I envy you because here it's been pretty much cool and damp for six weeks :)
